In the West.
VAUX EVACUATED.
A FORT ONLY IN NAME.
The High Commissioner reports:— London, June 8.(4 p.m.)
On the left of: the Meuse, there has been intermittent bombardment of our second lines.
On the right bank intense artillery fighting in the region of Thiaumont and Douaumont. After seven days ol sanguinary combat against the assaults of the troops, renewed ceaselessly, the garrison of I' ort ) aux reached the limit of their endurance and was unable to prevent the enemy from occupying the work, which was completely ruined by furious bombardment. We held the immediate approaches and the trenches to the lefi and right of the Fort, before which all enemy attacks have been broken by our fire.
The night was relatively calm on the rest of the front, except at Hartmannsweilerkoff, where very active artillery fighting has been maintained.
