Sri Rider Haggard will leave Wellington for Auckland to-morrow, and then go on to Vancouver.

Mr Chas. Grant, of New Plymouth, was yesterday appointed Inspector of the Taranaki County Council. There were 24 applications for the position.

His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Boon) received a telgram this afternoon to the effect that Private Petrie was returning to Stratford by the mail train to-night.

Sir Hartmann Just lias retired after thirty-eight years’ service in the Colonial Office. Mr H. C. M. Lambert, C. 8., has been appointed Secretary to the Imperial Conference.

Sir Joseph Ward, who has been .indisposed for some days, suffering from a severe cold, is now quite well again. He was prerent at the meeting of Cabinet on Monday afternoon.

The death is announced of Mr Charles Milton Price, a well-known post and telegraph official, who was until recently assistant inspector of post. offices on the West Coast and in Canterbury. He had many friends all over New Zealand.

Mr W. J. Guerin, formerly of New Plymouth, but now of the sub-editorial staff of ti: Wellington Evening Post, underwent another operation in the Bowep St ,'st Private Hospital on Monday, and hi reported to be making satisfactory A . r. g -eras towards recovery.

Mr T. Harle Giles, Conciliation Commissioner in Auckland, has sufficiently recovered to be able to get up for a few hours each day. Although making satisfactory progress. Mr Giles will not bo fit to attend to his official duties for some time yet.

A telegram was received from the Minister of Defence yesterday stating that Rifleman Percy Feek, of Waitara, had been wounded in the left shoulder. Rifleman Feek. is a son of Mrs W. Feek, Waitara, and a nephew of Mr T. Lawson, Stratford.

The death is reported from Hawe-A of Dr. George Van Slyke, who was ncll known in Wellington as a surgical specialist. He came from Canada to New Zealand nearly twepty years ago and practised his profession in Wellington and other centres. For some years mist he had been in had health, and about two years ago he met with a serums motor'car accident, from the offsets ot which he suffered until his death. Ho has left- a widow (a daughter of the late Mr E. T. Gillon), and t wo children.
