The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7, 1916. A GREAT LOSS.
Throughout the Empire to-day there will be, profound mourning a t the loss ot the battleship Hampshire with Britain’s greatest soldier on board. _ Lord Ki - chener’s place will,_ 11 i 1 . ( |h' e< \, W hard to fill, and it is difficult to believe that Britain’s finest military leader and organiser has passed to the Great Beyond. Lord Kitchener’s dramatic death on the High Seas closes a career of magnificent patriotism, and tlie suddenness of his going comes as a stunning blow. From the brief messages to hand at time ot writing, we can only gather t.iai, as ever, on his King’s business, Lord Kitchener was proceeding to Russia accompanied by members. of the Munitions Committee, and that the Hampshire, struck hy a mine or a torpedo, sunk in a few moments. Even the few who were able to take to the boats appear to have been lost. The death roll of British seamen is thus added to in this lalcjiil mo ntli of June by yet another full ship’s company who went down with Britain’s War Lord. The blow is a very bitter one, but it will steel every British heart to greater things, mid it will strengthen the determination to exact retribution for all that Lie civilised world has suffered at (lie hands of our hateful enemies. Words fail to express the nation’s heartfelt sorrow at Lord Kitchener’s death.
