At the annual meeting of the Cold Storage and Ice Association, Sir Thomas Mackenzie corrected erroneous statements, appearing in New Zealand papers that eight million carcases of New Zealand Were awaiting shipment. Really there were only two and a-half millions: accumulated, which was entirely due to the scarcity of tonnage. He expressed the hope that the experience o£ the value of frozen, meat, during the war would induce the British Government to help on the development of the association. In view of the probability of Continental nations importing meat after the war, he suggested the holding'of a conference to decide what inspection was desirable. He thought the New Zealand system quite adequate. Members suggested that the British Government be asked for a grant of £SOOO for educational research purposes. The matter has been referred to the Council. THE IRISH REBELLION. MARTIAL LAW CONTINUES. London, May 30. Mr 'Asquith , stated that martial-law would be continued in Ireland as a precaution. He hoped its disappearance would be speedy and complete. It would be resorted to only in urgent cases.
