■—■—■ THE BUTTER MARKET. London, May 25. Butter is quiet and occasionally a shade easier owing to the favourable weather increasing the make here ana in France. Canadian cheese 110 s, New Zealand 112 s to Ills, tending to decline. A large quantity of New Zealand is afloat, of which it is expected the trade will receive about half. Tnore are increasing supplies of Home-made, United States, an J Canadian. PRICE OF COLONIAL MEAT. THE ARGENTINE COMPETITOR. London, May 25. ]\ieat importers complain that Australian and New Zealand mutton and lamb are being sold at an average oi |3£d per pound cheaper than Argentine, 'ostensibly in order to keep the prices I down. It is alleged that the Government is thereby realising £20,000 weekMy less than might be obtained. This I sum is apparently going into the pockjets of intermediaries and is not benefiting the consumers, as the retail prices are the same as the Argentine. Forced sales of Colonial meat at lower prices than Argentine tend to prejudice the reputation of the Colonial produce to the advantage of its strongest competitor. - NEWTON KING'S REPORT. On Friday 19th, at Waiwakaiho, there was a small entry, all of which was sold under good competition as follows: Weaner steers (small) £1 18s to £2 7s, weaner heifers 30s, empty heifers £3 2s to £3 Bs, store cows £3 I7 S to £O, dairy cows £7 5s to £9, I springing ' heifers £6 to £B, young bulls £3 2s 6d. I At Douglas, on Monday 22nd, lambs wore 14s Bd, culls 7s, ewes in lamb i 18s Bd, forward owes, 225, fat and I forward wethers 23s Bd, fat and forIward cows £8 to £9 16s, store cows £5 lQs to £0 10s, fat bullocks £l2 15s to £ls 15s, 20-month steers £5 to £5 16s,- empty heifers £-! 13s, weaner heifers £2 7s 6d, weaner steers £2 17s.
At Stratford, on Tuesday 23rd, I had a full yarding, all-pens being wellfilled. Buyers were present in good numbers, making good competitions for all classes. Bidding! was very keeii ! on 20-month steers, these selling at from £5 19s to £6 18s.
