HOW TO WEAR PUTTEES.
The spiral puttee of the infantry soldier has of late been causing much anxious thought to the military authorities in Victoria, says the Melbourne “Age.” They have been confronted with the task of deciding be-
tween two schools of puttee wearers. One of these schools represents tinmen who wind their puttees upwards from the boot and tie them below the
knee, and the other represents the men of the new cult, who wind their puttees downwards and complete the job at the ankle. Military etiquette demands that there must be a uniform method of affixing puttees, and the authorities have therefore been debating as to which school shall receive their support. The old’ soldiers all “barrack” for the Imperial style of fastening the puttee at the top, but the men who have tried the' new method declare that it results in far more comfort. The Acting-Command-ant of the Victorian Military Division recently decided to settle the question. He secured opinions from both sides, and then referred the question to the medical authorities. Their verdict is for the new cult. They explain that there' is less chance of the tapes of the puttees interfering with the circulation wlien tied at the ankle. In view of this decision, the Commandant is issuing an order that in future all puttees must be tied the one way—at the ankle, instead of below the knee.
