Some interesting mementoes from the front have been sent to a Wellington lady by her son, a member of the New Zealand expeditionary force. They include a gas mask, a trumpet, and a bugle. The latter was used to sound tile "Last Post" over the late Mr Seddon's grave, and was also used during the Wellington ceremonies in connection with the Coronation of His -Majesty King George. The owner of the instrument was in the Permanent Artillery before leaving for the front.

It is rare to find a visitor an out and out supporter of toll gates, but the Taranaki Herald has unearthed one. The Waimate West County Council' has decided to support MiWilkinson's Bill for the abolition of toll-gates. It is rather a sore question with that council and with many other people. But there are two sides to it, and the other side is rather aptly put by Mr Vigor Brown, M.P. for Napier, who has just been motoring over the Taranaki roads. He was opposed to toll u;ates, hut at the risk of being called a reactionary he has decided, a s he told a Herald representative ou Monday, to oppose Mr Wilkinson's Bill. He has just motored over some 300 miles of Taranaki roads, in the Hawera, Eltham, Stratford, Taranaki, Clifton, and Egmonfc Counties, and ho declares' that the condition of the roads has been an eye-opener to him. He thought tnc Hawke's Bay roads were good, but be intends to advise local bodies to send their engineers to Taranaki to learn what good roads really are. In the three hundred miles lie traversed be found scarcely a bump, and he declares that although he had to pay tolls at four gates he would willingly have paid more for the privilege of travelling over such excellent roads.
