LOCAL AND GENERAL.
On a charge of breaking his prohibition order, Charles F. Leatham, farmei", of Opunake, who .failed to appear | at the Magistrate's Court to-day,, was convicted and fined £2 and costs.
Before commencing the business at the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, the Magistrate, Mr W. R. Haselden. said that while he was in Wellington he had the pleasure of seeing one of Stratford's solicitors, Mr R. Spencc. He was pleased to see he had two •stripes, and Corporal Spence assured hi mthat he was soon to receive another. Mr Haselden said he felt the greatest admiration for him. They may have had little differences in the Court but when he saw him in uniform one could not help admiring him, knowing that he was down there doing his duty.
