Massey) gives particulars of the manner in which the new recruiting scheme has called eligible men t 6 the colors. It was shoM’n that there were 303,704 effectives in the country, of whom 456/ had been accepted for the Expeditionary Forces, and 17,367 were British subjects between the ages of 1.7 and 18. There were 112,778 willing to become members of Expeditionary Forces, 44,838 were prepared to serve in a civil capacity, and- 35,725 were not prepared to . servo in any capacity. He mentioned that in the latter group .there were those who were physically unfit, and others were in gaols and other places, 9343 had volunteered, and., had been rejected; 4588 were foreign subjects; 69,799 'were British subjects between the ages of 45 and 50, and 434 were returned soldiers. The nationality of those on’ the National Register is as follows: Born in New Zealand 195,992; in Australia, 18,542; England and Wales, 49,836; Scotland 1’6,167; Ireland, 110,245. MEN FROM SAMOA. Wellington. May 17. The Defence Department advises that the Taliuie is bringing the following invalided men from Samoa (address of next-of-kin being given in parentheses): Lieutenant A. M. Jameson (Timaru), Corporal W. R. McConnell (Hinds). Privates H. Bennett (New Plymouth), H. T. Bray (Dunedin), W G. Chisr.ell (Wellington), A. E. Cogswell (Auckland); P. J. Ivruss (Adelaide) J. Meochen (Timarn), P. G. Morrissey (Dunedin), A. M. Plever (Milton), R. W. Simpson (Scotland), C. H. Smith (Westport), C. Feinder (England). The following is returning for duty: Corporal T. G. Given (Kaihaka).
