Police Inspector Wilson, of Wanganui.' conducted a police inquiry at the Stratford Magistrate’s Court this morning. A London cable says that judgment was reserved in the appeal case, i Milking 'Machine Company, versus the Simplex Milking Machine Company. The executive of the Stratford Gun Club met last evening and completed arrangements for the shoot to be held on Messrs Nelson and Green’s property, Regan Street east,, to-morrow. Proceedings will start at 11 a.m. vut i the Open Clayrßird Handicap of £3O, entries for which will be taken on the ground. Already several well-known shots have signified their intention of , competing, and it is expected that over twenty will find their way to the. mark. Sweepstakes will follow the re-j suit of the big money, and there should be plenty of opportunities for the most' ardent sportsman to get in to the prize-list. The officials for the day are: Referee. .Miss Mit reliant, M.A., Principal of St. Mary’s School, Stratford, who mas just returned from a twelve months tour of the world, and who saw a good ileal of England in the strenuous time the country has recently gone through., has very kindly consented to give a lecture in the Parish Hall tins evening entitled “England in Wartime.” There will be no charge for admission, and as the subject is an all-absorbing one just now there ought to be a large attendance.
In the cribbage match, between teams representing Mr Newton King s staff and the Public Works Department, played at Smith’s Rooms last

The persistent and carping criticism directed from one particular quarter against those of alien origin was rebuked by Mr Jennings in the House of Representatives. “Most of you,” lie said, “know what my sons have done—two have been killed in the war —and what I myself am prepared to do, but I desire to deprecate these attacks upon men born of German parents in this country who have proved their loyalty, and associated themselves with our nation’s life. These nu'ii are entitled to our respect, and not to our calumny.”
Attention is drawn in the latest issue of tlm New Zealand Surveyor to one remarkably dry area in Central Otago, where the annual rainfall is under 20in. The area in question lies, roughly, midway between Oamaru and Queenstown, and contains about 2750 square miles, or 1,760,000 acres. The Surveyor says it is very remarkable that, while along the AVest Coast, of the South Island, for a distance of over 300 miles ( '/.there exists a belt, about 40 miles wide, where the amiual rainfall is over 100 inches; on the other side of the backbone range, not more than a hundred miles distant, there is a large area where the annual rainfall is under 20 inches.
