Tile adjourned meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night, when Cr. Hancock's notice of V motion: "That the water rate of the current year be increased to ninepence, and that the special rate for water loans he not collected." came up for discussion. In answer to a question from Cr. Thompson, Cr. Hancock said the rate only applied to the water area. In seconding the motion, Cr. Thompson said the rate was on practically the same lines as the drainage question. The people who lived at the far end of the Flint Road, ■ and were about half a mile from the water area should not be made to pay for the water which they did not have the privilege of using. The Mayor said the people who owned sections which the water passed or was within 100 yards would have to pay half rate. The Town Clerk said the increase in the rate would realise £l4 or £lo more. The Mayor, in supporting the motion, said he did so on principle. It was rather strange to him that the Councillors all agreed on the motion, when they fought the drainage question tooth and nail. He believed in principle; principle was what he advocated ; those people using the water sh6uld be made to pay for it, and those did not use it should not pay.—The motion was carried. Employment for Wounded Soldiers. —Men wanted for military employment to release staff for active service. Men wanted for tree planting at Rotorua. Postmaster for Charleston wanted.
