IXT ER XED GER MANS. A question regarding the cost of maintaining Interned .Germans at the j internment centres in Now Zealand {was put by Mr Payne. The member i wanted to know the relative cost of (keeping the prisoners of “highest | grade” at Motuihi Island (Auckland) | and the ordinary prisoners at Somes . island. 1 THE COST OF LIVING.

j Mr Wilford (Hutt) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister if ho would set apart one week during the session for a full and complete discussion of the cost of living question, and if for that purpose he would move to amend the Standing Orders so as to allow private members to move in the direction of initiating such reforms as would reduce the people’s burdens, all of which were not caused by the war. f - WAR PROFITS. I Mr Wilford gave notice of his intention to move, “That this House is of opinion that the time has arrived when legislation should be introduced for the taxation of war profits, and .that in any such legislation a penal rate should be provided beyond tno ordinary rate for .financial shirkers.” j WHEAT TRANSACTIONS. | Information regarding the Government’s transactions in wheat was required by Mr G. Witty (Riccarton), who gave notice of a question regarding details of the various transactions in Australian and Canadian grain and the amount of the loss incurred - >•

APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. The cessation of the training of officers for Reinforcements was suggested by Mr Malcolm (Clutha). He gave notice to ask the Minister for Defence if, in order to provide opportunities for. promotion at the front, he would arrange to send no more officers from Now the troops forming Reinforcements to be dispatched in charge of ’ transport officers. I Mr Malcolm asked for information regarding the number of privates and non-commissioned officers who had been promoted to commissioned rank after departure from New Zealand.
