(Notes by Cicero). The track for the opening day of the Egmont Meeting promises to be rather ,"dead" after the recent heavy rains, and it is quite on the cards that the lighter weights may effect surprises. The Tongahoe Hurdles has drawn a dozen acceptors, included in which is Parawanui, who has won well over £4OO over hurdles, and is therefore ineligible to start. Just why he was accepted for is hard to understand. Lord Nelson (10.2) must be difficult to beat, although Calais (10.3) is reported as good over the battens. The Tawhiti Handicap is headed ;\v Glenroy (9.2) who incurred'a 71b penalty by his win at Avondale. Both lie and Astor may possibly find the going against them under the reavy loads, and Depredation and Veto, who are in very light, may head them off. On Feilding form the Railway Handicap looks good for Antwerp. Goldan Grafton is also nicely placed. There are no Desert Golds or Chortles engaged in the Ladies' Purse. In i'actjifc would be difficult to find a worse lot. Parawanui (12.2) has plenty of weight but under the circumstan -es may start favorite. Glen Esk is favored by the Taranaki track watchers. The Telegraph Handicap only drew ten acceptors out of a nomination in the vicinity ,o.f forty. Zion (B.C) is in very light; ps ; but may not be the'equal who is VfpfPjust now. The Mcllae Memorial (I 1 , miles), should provide an., interesting race. ■Want (7.7) has performed most consistently of late, and ntust. take a lot of beating, and with fiicwi Poto should carry the bulk of investments. THe-:iir.?t will conclude with the 'Wtrthi : HanQieapJ< ») which event Analogue and Black Ada stand out.
