STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
iViONTKLY MEETINC. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last. night, when there-were present: His Worship die Mayor (Mr J. W. Boon), and Crs A. J. !->avey, E. W. Hancock, S. B. Hunter, T. Law son, G. W. Mills, J. H. Thompson, A. D. Stanley, and W. H. H. Young. CORRESPONDENCE. J. T. Coodrick, wrote drawing attention to the entrance to his property in Cordelia Street, and requested that I either n light be erected or that a path be formed—Kef erred to Works and Lighting Committees for reports. i T. H. Pemij Stratford agent for the !Ncw Zealand Insurance Company I Ltd., wrote asking for a share of the Council's insurance. —Received. ! A. letter was received from the iPlumbers Board. Wellington, enclosing (resolutions passed at a recent meeting. I Received.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr T. D. Sullivan reported on <the progress of works for the past mouth as follows :
The formation of Juliet Street footpaths has been completed. The newly formed part on the west side from Celia "Street to Mr Beere's residence has been gravelled. Culverts have been inserted •in Broadway South near school grounds, Broadway North junction of Pembroke Road, junction Page and Portia Streets, junction Page street and Broadway, and one extended m J idiot Street near Mi; King's property. A tunnel lias been constructed in Juliet Street at a point three chains south of Celia Street to allow the formation work to be proceeded with. An entrance to Mr J. Laverty's property has been constructed. The footpath between Juliet Street and Orlando Street in Bear Street has been gravelled. A short length of footpath from Lear Street to Celia Street has been gravelled. Water tables have been cleaned up in Broadway North and South, Page Street,' Portia, Miranda,' and Opunake Road.—Adopted.
INSPECTOR'S, REPORT. The Borough Inspector (Mr W. .Rowson), reported that for the month of April, he impounded 19-head. of. fcatr tle and put in 10.. street. t .lights „— Adopted. ABATTOIR MANAGER'S, REPORT. Mr A. M. Spilman reported that the following stock wvvo slaughtered during April,;—Cows 00, heifers 45, oxen 2, calves 8, sheep 213, lambs 53 f . pigs, 17, tripes prepared 43. Slaughtering fees £53 8s (id, .blood aud offal £1? 'los, paddock rents £P2 10s—Total £7O 8s 6d. Stock condemned—Cows, 1 wholly, 5 partially; heifers, '4 partially; calves, I partially; pjgs, 1 partially; sheep. L wholly. It would be advisable to sell the swedes in. No.. 1, paddoclc towards 'of present month. A' start 'lias been made at .stumping and levelling No. 3 paddock. There are a great many holes to, fill up in this paddock to make it |nt for ploughing. I would be pleased .if the work of erecting the fence on [the 1 south side of the race be gone on I With before the bad weather sets in. .The race requires metalling very badly as it is working into large holes. T • have found it of no value to put shinfile on this race as the cattle cut it through in a very short time. As the jnew Municipal buildings are nearing ; completion, T would ask if the old .safe can come to the Abattoir, as it ; would afford some slight protection for the books against fire.—Adopted. ! It was decided to call tenders for the purchase of the swedes I j ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. I | j The following committees were elected for the ensuing year:
Works Committee—Crs Thompson, Davey and Young. Fire Brigade Committee—Crs Stanley, Davey and Lawson. Lighting Committee—Crs Hunter, Thompson and Young. Town Hall Committee—Crs Mills, Hunter and Stanley. Library Committee. —Crs Hancock, Mills and Rutherfurd. Abattoir Committee—Crs Hancock, Stanley and Lawson. Reserves Committee—Crs Hunter, Lawson and Mills. Band Committee—Crs Rutherfurd and Lawson. GENERAL. Cr Thompson said that there was some large stones on the street corners which made it very dangerous for cyclists and motor cyclists. If * cyclist struck one of these stones on a wet day he may skid and meet with a serious accident. The Engineer was instructed to have the large stones removed and tlio corners attended to. On the motion of Cr Lawson, it was decided to leave the matter of attending to the wooden kerhing and erodings in Juliet Street between •'■Ynion Street and Regan Street to the l Works Committee. Resolved on the motion of Crs Hancock and Davey, that owners be requested to clean watercourses between Portia and Hamlet Streets.
The Mayor moved, and Cr Davey seconded: That the .common seal of the Council be affixed to the agreement between the Stratford Electrical Supply Co. Ltd. and the Corporation, prepared by the Borough Solicitor. — Carried. Cr Lawson slated that there was a tree at the hack of the Municipal Buildings which over-hung the Council's property.--Iti-was decided to ask the owner to have the tree removed. Cr Lawson moved that Crs Davey and Hancock, and the Clerk, he appointed to act with reference to bringing down a report m regard to a revision oi r the motor by-laws of the Borough.—lt was eventually decided that.the police be asked to take action against furious driving, especially on special occasions when the streets are crowded. .NOTICE OF MOTION.
Cr Hancock moved, in accordance with his notice of motion, that the charge tor water supplied to closets connected with private septic tanks he 10s per year.—This was seconded by Cr Thompson, and carried. The second part of Cr Hancock's motion— "Thafythe Wtytjep rate lor the current year be increased to nin,epei]ce, and that the special rate for the' water hjans be not .collected"—was, after discussion, held over until the special meting to he held on Monday night next. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to ti'SJI A i?» Id were passed for payment.
