The case in which Annie Nicholson, a ■resident ,of the Great Barrier Island, was charged, that she published n defamatory libel concerning Dr. Bamford, a barrister and solicitor of Auckland, was settled on Wednesday by the accused making a public apology and acknowledgment that ■ the statements made by her were false, and'complainant withdrawing the information.
The : estates of 215 deceased persons wore certified for stamp duty during the month of April, the largest being that of Charles Bowker, Canterbury, £83,781. New Plymouth estates were; Jane Torry £1571, Burlinson Chisholm £1227, Francis A. Leatham £741. William Free £559.
A Christchurch telegram says that in the Supreme Court yesterday, the petition by Montague Harrison Wynyard and others, to wind up the Christchurch Oil Company, was adjourned .to June 2, counsel stating that a mutual agreement had been come to between petitioners and the company.
The ordinary meeting of the Stratford Borough Council takes place on Monday, when the following notice of , motion will he moved by Cr Hancock: (1) “That the charge for water supplied to water closets he applied to closets connected with private septic tanks” ; (2) “That the Water Rato for the current year he increased to nine-pence, and that the special rates for the water loans he not collected.” | The present season has been a very | good one for the dairy farmers of the ( Stratford district, and owing to the large amount of milk that has been j supplied the companies have been receiving daily right np to this date from the opening of the. season. From to-morrow the Stratford Dairy Company will receive milk every other day only. A special meeting of. the Stratford Borough Council will be held on Monday evening at 7.110.
