THE TRIAL OF RUA.
ANOTHER COMMITMENT. Per Press Association. Rotorua May 3. 9 This afternoon Pukopuke Kaura was committed for trial at Auckland, bail being refused, on charges of with intent to resist the arrest of Rua, and of attempting to discharge a firearm at Constable Skinner. It was shown in evidence that the Native picked up a rifle dropped by Constable Fahey, when he was struck by Horomonn, and accused twice attempted to fire the rifle at Constable Skinner, hut could not, the safety catch being locked. Constable Shearman covered him, but seeing that the catch of the Maori’s rifle was locked, he did not fire. Accused dropped the rifle and bolted, hut he was pursued and caught. The inquest on Toko Rua and Te Maipi was resumed this afternoon. Constables Rusliton and Rogers stated that they fired at deceased, and they believed that they and Constable Maloney killed them. Mr Dyer, S.M., said that he could not give a formal verdict, not having seen the bodies. Fnaffieially, his unqualified opinion was that tbe deceased were killed by the police in the execution of their duty, and in self defence. Tue inquest would be adjourned sine die, for the Minister to take it further if he wished.
