Mr Fred Carltoiv the original ‘‘Musical Make,” will present a unique entertainment by extracting quaint music from quaint instruments. Mr Carlton has recently toured with great success throughout Fuller’s Australian and New Zealand vaudeville circuits.

A returned soldier, Private Robert •Reid, son of Mr A. W. Reid, Stratford, was unfortunately the victim of a tram accident in Manners Street, Wellington shortly after 7 o’clock on Friday evening. He was crossing the street to meet two friends, and stopped to let a car going to Lambton station pass, and not looking the other way, stepped in front of another car proceeding from Wadestown to Cuba : Street. He was thrown forcibly to the ground, but clear of the car, and when taken to the druggist’s shop of Len McKenzie, was in an unconscious condition. Dr. flislop was sent for, and after rendering first aid, ordered his removal to the hospital, as, in addition to numerous bruises, he had sustained some injury to the head. Reid was taken to the hospital by Constable Harvey. Before admittance to the institution he bad ajrparently recovered from the shock he received, but it was deemed expedient to retain him at the hospital, at any rate until Saturday. Ho has a brother residing at Daniel Street, Newtown, and has been in camp to return to the front with the 12th Reinforcements.

At the weekly parade of the Strat'ford District High School Senior Cadets, held this afternoon, Mr J. W. McMillan (Chairman of the ‘School Committee) presented Mr Fred Foley s silver shield, iron by tile Cadets of 112’ Company, as the best Senihr Cadet Ccimpany in the fiuilrTl past on Soldiers Day, to Lieuteiiant Bowler.' In ‘mak-D mg the presentation , Mr McMillan said the honor of winning the- shield rested • not only with the Cadets, 1 but, with Mr > Tyrer ('the Headmaster), lieutenant >; Bowler (officer in charge), and Licuten- g ant Gray (the instructor).- Discipline 1 'was the first essential to make a good i koldief or cadet, without which they . were useless. Tlie hoys should remember that the discipline le'arnt on the parade ground should lie carried out in their own homes. He congratulated the hoys on winning the shield. Mr Tyrer, in a short address, said there wore two sides to a boy’s character,, and in his experience, the hoy who held his own at school, one who participated in all games, and took kicked shiris, humps, etc., wpth a smile was the typo who would make a name for himselr in after-life. After the presentation, three cheers were given by the visitors for the Cadets, afid the boys replied by heartily cheering the donor of the shield, Mr Foley. The inscription on the shield read; “Mr fleet Foley’s shield, best Senior Cadet Coy., march past, Soldiers Day, 1916.”
