At the annual meeting of householders of the Douglas School district, the chairman (Air £• Walter), presented the following inspector’s report: The reading, writing, arithmetic, composition, and re^,.ration, was satisfactory to cxc^jiont; drawing, singing, geogva.pny, history, good to excellent; nature study and elementary sj-tcnco, Handwork, needlework, good to excellent ; decjpline, tone, eificiency, of the school, very good; marks allotted in connection with beautil \ ing the grounds and supervision of the m'emises, etc., 83 out ol a possible 100. The meeting expressed its appreciation of the work of the teachers (Air J. W. T. Jones and Aliss T» Cameron)’. The following balance-shoot tffts. .also presented, December ,31st,, J})ls.:^ Income. —Credit balance, ATarch 31, 1915, £ll 6s ud, grants for incidental £l3 17s fid, levelling site, school £3 18 s 3d, rent of paddock £5 Is, Dis. F.gmont 8.C.0. 4s 9d.—Total, £3l 10s Ud.
Expenditure.—Cleaning school out £4 18s, fuel £4 12s fid, repairs etc. T I 16s, school stationery £1 13s fid, halfshare level she £3 18s 3d, hank chaige os, timber for swings £2 Os 9(1, sundries 8 S 7d ? credit balance £l4 )0s 4d. —Total, £34 10s lid. •, j Approval was expressed, ol the Committee’s work, especially in semiring the addition to the school. ; A resolution was unanimously passed to the effect that the householders regret the unsatisfactory stale the schools have been placed in by tie action of the education Board in the procuring of proper school books; also, that they ’.request the Board to endeavour to have a universal system of books introduced throughout the Dominion, the same to he procured from the Education Department by tin' pupils at cost price. It was mentioned that* not only were the scholars placed at a disadvantage in removing from One school to another, but that. the. parents were put to extra needless expense in procuring a set of books of different kind at present in use in the. school.
The meeting expressed its strong disapproval of the unfair position the pupils were placed in the' grouping oil standards in all subjects'except arithmetic. In examination “test,” as much was expected of the pupil who was placed from 'Sthmhml 1 to fi as from Standard 5 to 0, likewise Standard 2 to 4 as from 3 to 4; Standards 3 and 5 being eliminated, and if passed in their respective groups, the following year would he removed hack to Standards 5 and 3; Standards fi and 4 being eliminated. I twas the firm opinion of the meeting that too many experimental theories have of late years been introduced into the public schools by the Educational authorities. DOUGLAS SOLDIER BOYS. At a public meeting, arrangements were made to give a farewell to Air D. G. Xeedham, who has enlisted for active service.. The Douglas d.strict is nearing the end of single men of military age capable of rendering active service. Latest reports from Alessrjf Thomas St, George and Rac Wylie, at the front, show that they are vfpll.
