The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 1916. GENERAL ROBERTSON'S RULE.
Advices from London state that General Robertson has done wonders in the way of improving matters at the War Office in the few months in which he has been allowed, a free hand.. A Sydney Sun correspondent describes him as a plain, strong, unprejudiced man admitted into one of the most exclusive preserves in England. "He reminds one somewhat, in a distant way, of a Cromwell stepping with simple and wholesome methods into a I hothouse of traditions and privileges." 'Many venerable officers have been sent back from the Western front, and their places taken by young officers who have shown promise on the actual lighting field. According to this correspondent, it is undecided, as yet, whether more annoyance and inconvenience are caused by generals being put up or put away. Soldiers suffer much in silence, and their experience of brigadiers in France is that all British generals are alike, and all are exacting upon the man in the ranks. It is certain, however, that the great-hearted and earnest young officers ami privates who are going to win this war are grateful to General Robertson. We was determined to have all his changes completed before the spring campaign, and had got the worst of the recalling over. There lias been wonderfully little kicking, for the Englishman has a genius for carrying through reform without violence. A few strong men at the head of the 'British War Office have certainly worked wonders in the way of re-organisation and re-construet'on. Many old time-honoured regular ms and methods of procedure hav* 1 hf-en swept, away, and much of the work oi reform has fallen on General Robertson himself.
