AN OBJECT LESSON.
Even a fat bullock provides an object .1 lesson in sociology, economics, class- j prejudice, and the l ights of man, says 1 tlie Sydney Daily Telegraph. The, story it goes on. to tell is as follows;' A leading butcher testified before the learned tribunal appointed to deal with the price of necessary eoimnodities that in a 7001 b. beast there were only 71b. of fillet steak, and yet there | were 70 customers every day who all | clamored for fillet steak, and wore with difficulty persuaded to take any other (part of the animal. How could" Solon or Solomon or even Mr Holman himself solve such a problem? No man by taking thought can add one pound of fillet steak to the niggardly supply that Xature in her inscrutable way has apportioned to a 7001 b, bullock. On what principle, therefore, 1 should the coveted lump of succulent food be allotted ? The plutocrat j relying on the law of supply >tnd de- | mand might claim the right to purchase the whole 71b. by paying a price that none of the other 69 applicants could afford. That, would suit the butcher very well, but not the people who required fillet steak for dinner. The 1 democrat, on the other hand, relying on the principle of equality as well as ; liberty and fraternity, might require the butcher to divide the 71b. of fillet equally among all the candidates. In which case each would get about one small mouthful. In a really cnlight- i ened State, however, in which a State. butchery happened to* be an accom- j plished fact, the Government would, of course, take over the bullock—and ■ eat thp 71b. of fillet steak itself. |
