GENERAL SMUTS' ADVANCE.

General Smuts reports that the mounted men. nn>r General Vanderventer, on April k.. :■; p/sed and surrounded a German force, equipped with machine-guns, in a mountain stronghold in the Arusha district. The Germans surrendered on April 6. Official: General Smuts' later reports indicate that the success at Arusha was more extensive than appeared. The German force which capitulated was considerable. Seventeen European and 404 native prisoners have already surrendered, and others are coming in. Machine-guns and much ammunition were captured. THE NEWS CONFIRMED. The High Commissioner reports:— London, April 8 (7.20 p.m.) A British official states: — The south success at Arushia was more extensive than at fust reported. A considerable German force was surrounded and capitulated. Already seventeen Europeans and 404 native soldiers have surrendered witli their machine-p;uns and large quantities of ammunition, whilst more prisoners remain to be brought in.
