The death occurred last week of My A. J. Swanson, of Sydney street, Wellington.

■ Mr W. Lyon, solicitor, has been appointed secretary ,of the Woodville jockey Club out of four applicants.

Mrs Mclsaae, of New Plymouth has received a cable from her son, Regimental Q.M.S. Athol Mclsaac, stating that he has received a commission.

Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Taumarnmii, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last evening after spending a short time in his electorate.

The death is announced of Donald Dinnie, the famous Scottish athlete. He won over eleven thousand contests. Mr H. W. Reid, of the Union Bank, New Plymouth, has volunteered for service with the Expeditionary Forces, and has passed the medical examination. The wedding took place at Hawera yesterday of Dr. T. Milroy, of Manaia, to Miss Sidney Tonks, only daughter of Airs and Airs H. S. Tonks, Hawera. Air John Anstey, M.P. for Waitaki, who underwent an operation sorae weeks ago, is now in fairly good health again, and is' able, to attend to his ordinary duties. One of Auckland’s old identities, Air John Waymouth, well known in boatbuilding and yachting circles, died at his residence, Howe street, on Saturday last at the ago of 71.

A cablegram has been received by Air T. M. Wilford, M.P., that his son, George McLean Wilford, who enlisted on the outbreak of war, has been promoted to a first lieutenancy.

A London cable announces the death of Sir John Gorst, aged 80 years. Deceased held various minor offices in Conservative Ministries and took a great interest in general social ques* tions.

Major W, H. Fletcher, of New Plymouth, invalided from Gallipoli in December, has been spending most of his furlough in Scotland, where for a fortnight he was the guest of Mrs Purvis Russell Montgomery, a wellknown New Zealander. At the end of February he was at Hornchurch, expecting to leave with the next draft for the front.

A cablegram has been sent by a number of Wellington lawyers to Flight Sub-Lieutenant Alfred de Bathe Brandon, son of Mr A. do B. Brandon, congratulating him upon having surmounted and bombed a Zeppelin under circumstances related in recent press messages. Lieutenant Brandon is a member of the Wellington firm of Brandon, Hislop, and Brandon, solicitors.
