Though during the height of the storm many naval liberty men took to the boats and returned to their ships, all reached their destinations safely except a cutter belonging to the Conquest, which a steam launch was towing, when the hawser broke. It is believed the cutter capsized. Forty-five men were drowned, of whom thirty-siven were married.
