Privates H. Burmester and H. Chadvvick, who have been spending a few days holiday in Stratford, returned to camp by the mail train this mornng.
Captain J. B. Hine, M.P., returned home by the mail train- on Saturday evening, int a nding to spend a few days in Stratford before returning to Featherston camp.
Mr Ashmead Bartlett will be a guest of the New Zealand Club at luncheon to-morrow, and the following afternoon Mill be entertained by the Wellington journalists.
In view of possible fighting during the attempt to capture Rua, Dr. Brewster, of New Plymouth, who is attached to the Featherston military camp, accompanies the police expedition.
A farewell function will be held in the Methodist Sunday School to-mor-row evening in honor of the Rev. A. Header, who is proceeding to Thorndon, and the Rev. A. 0. who is leaving for Eltham.
Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Taumarunui, and Mrs Jennings, arrived in Auckland on Thursday. Mr Jennings has recently been through his electorate with the Hon. James Allen, the Hon. W. Fraser, and the Hon. G. W. Russell.
The latest list of military appointments includes the following paragraph: 11th (Taranaki) Regiment: Captain W. E. S. Furby having been struck off the strength of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is absorbed into the establishment.
At the Auckland Chief Post Office on Friday; Mr F. D. Holdsworth, who is retiring from, the chief postmastership after a long and honorable career in the service, was presented on behalf of the district staffs, with a purse of sovereigns.
On the eve of his departure for Trentham, Mr S. Macalister, or Messrs Rutherfurd, Macalister and Coleman, was presented.by the remaining members of" the firm and by the staff with a wristlet watch on Saturday afternoon. The presentation was made by Mr E. S Rutherfurd, who, in a few wellchosen words, wished Mr Macalister God speed and a safe return. Mr Macalister suitably replied, thanking the members of the firm and the staff for the presentation.
At the Stratford Club on Saturday evening the committee and members met for the purpose of saying farewell to Mr R. Spence, (Messrs Spence and Stanford) and Mr S. Macalister (Messrs Rutherfurd, Macalister and Coleman), prior to their departure with the 15th Renforcements. On behalf of the members, Mr W. H. H. Young, the president in a short speech, wished the departing men God speed and a safe return. Messrs Spence and Macalister left for the N.C.O.'s Camp by the mail train this morning.
The funeral of the late Douglas Edward Candy, a pupil at the New Plymouth High School, which took place at Manaia last Tuesday, A\as one of the largest that has been in the district. Kelatives and friends attended from all parts of the district. Out of respect for the deceased's father, who has been an Oddfellow for a number of years, the local Oddfellows' Lodge members attended in a body; also all the public school children. The service at the graveside was most impressive. The pall-bearers were former school rotates of the deceased when he attended the Manaia school.
