A London cable says that Mr Hughes is improving, but it is doubtful whether even if he is invited, that he will be able to attend the Pans conference.

The Hon. Sir Walter Buchanan, ML C. has accepted the position of hon colonel of the 7th Ruahine Regiment of the New Zealand Defence For-

" Mr Edgar McDougall, of the Castlecliff works, Wangauui, has been appointed engineer of the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, and takes up his duties on May 1.

The death occurred at ChristchurcK on Tuesday of Mr Thomas Henry Barnett, who was well.known for many years in commercial and musical circles there. The late Mr Barnett was born in London in 1846.

The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F Massey) celebrated his sixtieth birthday on Wednesday, having been born in Londonderry on March 29, 1856. Mr Massey arrived in Auckland in the ship City of Auckland in 1869, and has, therefore, been a resident of the Dominion forty-seven years. He was first elected to Parliament in 1894.

Not content with the meritorious services rendered by his son, Corporal Bassett, in recognition of which the latter had the highest of all military honors, the V.C., conferred upon him, his father, Mr F. C. Bassett, has donned the King's uniform. Mr Bassett, who has also been raised to the rank of Corporal, is at present in Auckland on his final leave.
