A London cable says that Mr W. M. Hughes is improving in health. A Sydney cable says that Dr. Mawson has sailed for England to till an, official position. % His Excellency the Governor reviewed the Eleventh Reinforcements at Trentham yesterday. The nun niadej a good impression by their fine bearing, Mr F. J. Mouat, solicitor, of the Lands and Survey Department, has been nominated as a candidate tor election to the Public Service Appeal Board. Dr. Geary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, who left recently for Rome, has cabled to the effect that he is improving rapidly in health, and that he'is enjoying the trip. "Mrs Wells, of Patea, who is in her ninetieth year, recently sent a parcel to the Military Hospital Guild of Wanganui, containing socks, mittens, and Balaclavas, all knitted by herself. At the March examination for land surveyors, which has just concluded, ten candidates sat and three passed, namely, T. D. McLean (Greymouth), F. R. Sinale (Hamilton), and F. A. Fendall (Auckland). Nurse E. M. Stronaeh, who served in a New 'Zealand Hospital in Egypt, and who has been home on furlough, has been recalled to active service and will leave Stratford to-morrow morning.

Word has been received by Nurse Stronaeh of Stratford, that her second son, Donald Grant' Stronaeh, who enlisted in the Imperial Army at the outbreak of the war, being in London at the time, has received a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

The death occurred yesterday morning at Tauherenikau, of Private Roger Byrnes, elder son of Mr and Mrs Byrnes, of Rahotu. Death was. due to complications supervening measles. Deceased, who was only 20 years of age Was a ' member of the Eleventh Reinforcements. He will be accorded a military funeral at Featherston.

Mr J. P. Luke, Mayor of Wellington, accompanied by Mrs Luke and some members of his family. have been staying for a few days at the Dawson Falls Mountain House, Yesterday they motored into Eltham on their way to New Plymouth. The Argus says Mr Luke expressed himself delighted with his stay at the Mountain" House-and with the general progressiveness of the district, the roads jn particular taking his attention.

Mr R. L. Garden, well-known at Normanbv as holding a commission in the 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles), and as lately a sergeant-instructor in infantry at Trentham, has been appointed' a. second-lieutenant in the X.Z.E.F., and posted to C. Company of the 11 th Reinforcements,. for active service. Second-lieutenant L. W. Meuli (formerly of the Manaia Senior Cadets), has been posted to the same company.
