The War Department admits that Herrera, Carranza’s chief lieutenant in the north, has gone over to Villa with two thousand troops, and other defections are rumored. Bad news has been received from Tampico. The populace (A a wide district is inflamed against Americans, and an uprising in favor of Villa is feared. It is probable that, in order to cope with the situation and keep open communication, the regular army will guard the frontier. Senator j Sherman, in the Senate, said that j Genera] Pershing might meet with the I same fate that Gordon met at Khartoum.
