Sister Leonora (otherwise known as Norah Clements), one of four nuns who recently went to Taumarunui for the opening of the now convent, was drowned in the Wanganui River, near Manunui, on Monday afternoon. The nuns celebrated St. Joseph's Day, the jubilee of the foundation of the order to which they belong, by a picnic at Manunui.

After lunch, Sister Leonora, who, it is understood, was fond of rowing, pulled out into the stream, but she ' lost an oar, and got into difficulties. '. Father Fordo, a member of the party, ) Went to her assistance, wading out in- ! to the stream till the water rose to < his neck, and pushed the boat inshore. j The current, which was strong, ovorj turned the craft, and by the time ' Father Forde had regained his feet, j the occupant of the boat was floating I some 300 yards down the river. She i was seen to rise twice, but no sound j was heard from her. Ten minutes later her body was recovered, but all I efforts at restoration failed. Sister J Leonora was the fifth daughter of Mr I J. J. Clements, of Remuera, and was twenty-two years of age. An inquest was held at the convent I and the coroner returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned," and commended Father Fordo's efforts to rescue deceased.
