The death of Lord Scarsdale-is announced from London.

Lord Hardinge, ex-Viceroy of India, has been decorated with the Order of the Knight of the Garter, states a London cablegram.

Mrs Mary Crawley, of Richmond, Tasmania, has attained to the great age of 101 years, having been born in Ireland on March 4, 1815, 106 days before the battle of Waterloo. She arrived at Hobart in the ship Maria Hanson (Captain Plunkett) in 1849, and two years later took up her residence at Richmond, where she has lived ever since. She was twice married, her second husband dying many years ago. Mrs Crawley continues to enjoy good health.

Mr E. S. Rutherfurd, of Strafford, received information by telegram on Monday, evening of the sudden death of his father, Mr John Rutherfurd, at Hamilton, at the advanced age of 81 years, and left next morning by the mail train for the Waikato. The late Mr Rutherfurd was pne of the earliest settlers in the Wairarapa, having taken up his residence there in 1863. He was the first settler to take, up land in the then unbroken virgin bnsh between* Maste.rton and Palmerston North, and he resided at his sheep station, Wairere, for over 45 years. Previous to his settling in New Zealand he was an officer in the East India Co's. Navy, and saw active service in China and the Persian Gulf. He served in the British expedition which conquered Burma, and in company with his elder brother, LieutenantGeneral T. W. Rutherfurd, he assisted in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny. Mr Rutherfurd, after staying for the interment, returned to Stnttford last evening.
