TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

THE MONTHLY MEETING. At the meeting of the Taranaki Education Board at New Plymouth on Wednesday, there were present: Messrs H. Trimble (chairman), A., Morton, E. Marfell, F. Mackay, J. Young, R. .Masters and G. A. Adlam. j Leave of absence was granted Mr A. H l . Halcomhe and Rev. A. B. Chappell. TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS. The chairman reported that during the interim he had made the following temporary appointments:—Okoke, Miss P. Murray, sole charge; Kaimata, Miss Elsie Bollinger, head teacher; Toko, .Miss L. Spence, first assistant, .Miss Grace Mount, second assistant; Pukengahu, Miss Grace Coleman, sole charge. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer reported : Stanley.—Owing to this school being burnt down it became necessary to find temporary accommodation. Acting on instructions we secured the church opposite the school site for half the children, and a building formerly used as a shop for the other half. We put in extra windows and made other alterations, and altogether the place is fairly convenient. 1 have prepared a plan for a .new school at Stanley. A special feautre has been made of the ventilation, asshown. A copy, endorsed by the inspector, has been forwarded to the Department, anji application made for a grant. Hurimpona Junction,—A grant having been authorised for tins school, the work will be started as soon as we ■ possibly can, tinder the circumstances. 1 am placing the timber order immediately. STANLEY ROAD FIRE. The chairman, reporting tin the enquiry into the Stanley Road School fire, said the evidence showed that the fire started in the shelter-shea, ,and spread from there to the school. The headteacher had a fire in her room on the day of the fire, and she was, not absolutely certain that the fire was extinguished. The evidence of the caretaker showed that after removing the ashes and throwing them outside she put some, paper from the fireplace into the wastepaper box in the shelter-shed. "The only conclusion 1 can come to," continued the chairman, . "is that there 'were some live ashes in the fire-place,, I which were removed with the paper Und put into the box in the shed, thus accidentally causing the fire. The thanks of the Board are due to Mr Slater and other residents for saving the furniture, and for their efforts to save the school." The report was adopted, and a copy will be forwarded to the Depart--1 ment. '

SCHOOL AT WAIHAPA ROAD. Mr .Masters reported having visited the Waihapa road to arrange for the opening of a temporary school there. Mr George Brown had kindly offered, free of rent, a very suitable building,. 21ft by Lift, and be offered no objection to the building remaining in its present position, instead of having it shifted to the school site. Mr Neil Brown was prepared to provide accommodation for the children's horses on the farm opposite. He recommended that the school should be opened as early as possible. The report was adopted.

GENERAL. It was decided to make an application fto the Department for a grant for a shelter-shed at the Stanley School. The Director of Education notified that in view of the urgent need for restricting expenditure, the Minister regretted that at present he could not see bis way to make a grant for the erection a new school on the Finnerty road. ] The Director of Education wrote i that the Board's request for a grant of CIS lis in respect of the'engineering classes at the Technical College had been approved. The Secretary for Education notified that out of the vote for special grants for school buildings a grant of £l5O would he made to the Beard for the erection of a moveable school at Hurimonna. The chnirmnn and Messrs Masters and Morton were appointed. a teach* ers' selection committee.
