FALL OF USCIECZKO. ANOTHER RUSSIAN SUCCESS IN EASTERN GALICIA. AUSTRIANS’ FINAL STAND, (Received 8.5 a.m.) Amsterdam, March 21. An Austrian communique states:— After half a year’s brave defence, we evacuated the ruined bridge and fortifications north-west of Uscieczko. Although the Russians exploded a great breach in the defences, the garrison, which were outnumbered eight-fold, resisted for seven hours, midst violent gun and infantry fire. Small detachments and tlie wounded proceeded to boats on the southern hank of the Dneister, hut owing to the concentrated fire of the enemy, such means of transport was soon abandoned. The I garrison at night-time cut their way through Uscieczko, which the enemy strongly held. The battles for the bridge and fortifications at Uscieczlco will remain for all time as a glorious page in the Army’s annals.
