BRITISH EAST AFRICA. CENERAL SMUTS' OPERATIONS. IMPORTANT C'JC CESSES. [United Phksh Association.] (Receive:! 'To a.m.) London, March 17. A British East African oflicial states that General Smuts is operating in the most difficult part of the German country and if the enemy is thorough4jv broken there the effect will he most important, and will likely load to wholesale desertions by the Natives. The rapidity of the operations is possible owing to the construction of ;s strategic railway from Voi; crossing the waterless deserts, and linking up with the British frontier. The scenes of General Smuts' latest successes are important military centres. It is difficult to see what tiie Germans retreatling along the Tanga railways can do unless they strike across to the Dares-salanm-TTjiji' railway, and make a stand at Tabora.
