SPORTING.

OPUNAKE RACES. The Opunake Racing Club's annual gathering yesterday was the most successful cue Club bus yet held, and attracted an unusually large attendance. Tiie sum of £1G } 656 was put through the totalisator, as against £13,182 at last year's meeting, an increase of JU3474. The day was overcast, a light drizzle in the afternoon turning to heavy rain in the evening, but this did not interferere seriously with the day's sport. Some very good raeing was witnessed, and close finishes were mostly the order of the day. Tin 1 'principal event, the Racing Club's Handicap, proved a lucky win for Maid o' Gowrie, the favorite (Analogue) making a'just-too-late run and failing to reach the winner by a short head. There was some indifferent riding at the meeting, hut 0. McCarten ! was on the winner of the first live hat races, and just missed gaining the verdict in the sixth, which is certainly a rather remarkable performance. All .the officials are to be complimented on their good work.
