GERMANS REPULSED AT VAUX. FIVE HEAVY ATTACKS FAIL. Oitkd Pbess Association. (Received 9.35 a.m.) London, March 17. Official.—Five heavy German attacks at Vaux were shattered with heavy losses. OFFICIAL NEWS. The High Commissioner reports:— London, March 17 (1.50 p.m.) West of the Meuse the bombardment slackened in the course of the night in the region of Bethiucourt and Cumierers. Since the sanguinary check of the attack yesterday, the enemy has not renewed attempts on Morthomme. Bast ♦){' the Mouse a recrudescence of tho bombardment was followed by ;> series of violent offensives against th«> village and Fort Vaux. Five suc-cessive-attacks with great effectiveness were thrown by the Germans without success two being on the village and t wo others against the crest which the fort surmounts, lastly one attempting to debouch on the road south-east of the village of Vaux.' All these attacks were broken by French curtains of fire and mitrailleuses, costing the enemy important sacrifices. At Woevre there has been only a
reciprocal cannonade throughout the .sector west of Pont-a-Mousson and a coup de main on a salient of the line opposite Bois de Mortmarfc, the enemy losing prisoners and suffering other casualties. FRENCH CHECK THE ENEMY. Paris, March 17. A communique says: After a most violent bombardment on the Bethineourt-Cumieres front the Germans in the afternoon made a strong attack on Morthomme, but the wave> of assault were unable to secure % -footing at any point, and they compelled to fall back towards Crows' Wood, where our concentrated (ire. winch was immediately let loose,' inflicted great losses. Our batteries on several occasions caught the Ger-; mans who were marching on the right bank of the Mouse.
SLACKENING ON THE WEST. UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS AT, VAUX. (Received 12.35 p.m.) Paris, March 17. A communique states: The bombardment on the west; of the" Meuse is slackening. No fresh attempt has been made at Morthomme. There was intense bombardment east of the Meuse, then ai series of the most violent offensives against the. village and fort of Vaux. Five successive attacks Avere hurled without success; twoagainst the village, two on the slopes .leading to the fort, and one east °f the village. Our curtains of fire and machine guns shattered all and cost the enemy important, sacrifices.
