'J'lie Pope, writiig to Cardinal Basil Pompili, says: "We ave throwing ourselves among the belligerents as a father between sons who are at strife. We have entreated them in the name of Clod, who is love infinite, to renounce their purpose of mutual destruction. Our paternal counsels have hitherto been unheeded, hut v.v must raise our voice against a war which seems to be the suicide of civilised Eunpe. We trust Catholic families will join in fervent praye.' and Christian mortification; and wo especially appeal to the mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters ol the combatants to lay at the Heavenly Throne an offering of voluntary sacrifices which will tn.n aside the most just anger of God."
