A GIRL STOWAWAY.
SEX AGAIN DISCOVERED. Sydney, March 8. Maud Butler, the stowaway, who almost succeeded in getting to the front, again boarded a. transport, tricking the sentries by feigning inebriety. A false identification disc ho trayed her, and she was arrested. She promised not to make the attempt again.
A novel interest attached to the arrival at Melbourne on Christmas Day of the “Blue Funnel” liner Achilles, owing to the presence on board of a young woman who is said to have ie--1 centlv stowed away clad in a soldier’s khaki uniform, on a troopship. Ihe officers of the Achilles would give no information regarding theii stiang. 'passenger, but upon the arrival of the 'Achilles the defence authorities were formally notified by the port immigration officer that the young woman I was on board. The young woman was still in khaki when the Achilles reachled Melbourne. She is said to be a well-set-up gjrl, who, might easily bo mistaken for one of the opposite sex. Some particulars of the girl’s escapade were obtained from *tlie defence ! authorities. The girl, whose name has not been divulged, is 18 years of lego. She disguised Herself as a soldier, and managed to get on board a ; troopship outward hound from Sydney. The disguise w%s excellent, and the girl escaped detection for two days, jSlip admitted her sex, and was transferred to the Achilles, as that vessel was to call at Melbourne. The explanation given by the girl for her escapade was an overpowering desire to see, her brother, who is in Egypt on active service. Knowing that she would not he allowed to land in Egypt if her her sex were known, she formed the 1 plan of disguising herself as a soldier. The girl’s story has been accepted as true, and the military authorities decided not to prosecute.
