GERMANY’S FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. United Pkebs Association. ! f ,London, March 6. Communal rates in Germany, which are based on the income-tax, have increased enormously. The pre-war rate of 105 per cent, of income-tax prior to the war rose during the latter part of 1914 to 189, and in 1915 it reached 199, It is now 216 per cent. FARM LABOR IN CANADA. In order to increase the supply of farm labor the Government of Ontario has agreed to allow fifteen thousand students of high schools and colleges to work on farms from May to October without forfeiting their status V * VICTORIA CROSSES. The King has awarded \ ibtoria Crosses to Private Charles Hull, 21st Lancers, for rescuing an officer under enemy fire, and to Private Harry Christian, Royal Lanca shires, for rescuing three men under heavy fire.
ITALY SHORT OF SHIPPING. Italy is feeling the shortage of tournee severely. Admiral Bettolo suggested that they should arrange for the construction of 50,000 tons or cargo boats in the next ten yc.us. These would be at the disposal of the State in a national emergency, the builders receiving a subsidy of £290,000 annually.
