PROHIBITION PROBLEM.
REFERENDUM IN MANITOBA, [United Pkeks Association.] Ottawa, March 6. The referendum on the prohibition issue in Manitoba has been fixed for March 13th. There is tremendous interest in the campaign, which is being fought on non-partisan lines. Crowds of orators have been imported from other provinces and the United States. The liquor interest are replying by a deluge of posters. The bulk of the daily newspapers support closing the bars, and the majority are refusing to accept the liquor party advertisements. The women's vote is unoperative until the new rolls are compiled, which will not be in time for the referendum. A simple majority will suffice to carry total prohibition, which would then become effective on thirty-first May. 1 Temperance advocates are hopeful of victory, and the hotel interests, while hopeful that the measure will be defeated, have taken steps to comply with the strict letter of the law in case of eventualities, and are renting warehouses outside the boundaries to which stocks can lie removed and dispensed.
