METHODIST CONFERENCE.
[ PATRIOTIC ART UNIONS. Per Press .Ars"o'ATl<w. | Auckland, March .'*. At tlio Methodist Conference tonight it was resolved: "That the conference' views witli alarm the increasing mania for gambling in the community, and condemns the tvil principle of State under which totalisator betting, are unions, and raffles have flourished." The conference expressed its profound regret that, in the guise of patriotism, licenses should have been given by those in authority lor unworthy methods of raising money for ,-oldiers. The Rev. Mi- Chappell, supporting tlio motion "that the Government should establish a strict censorship over all pictures before they were screened at the various picture theatres," said that a picture theatre manager had informed him that on account of the morbid nature of a p:cure which had been passed by c'.e censor he would not allow it io io shown. The Rev. T. F. Jones was appointed Secretary of the Foreign Missions Committee. The, Rev. Sinclair moved that the election of president and secretary of the conference b e at the conference at which they take office. This was previously submitted to the Synod, and supported by five and objected to by four. The resolution was carried by 83 votes to 62.
