HOPEFUL SIGNS. [United Puess Association.] (Received 12. 45 p m.) London, February 28. There is little news except through the communiques. The public cheered M. BrhuicFs glowing story of tiie recapture of Douaumpnt. Other hopeful signs are that the Germans have not issued further special headquarter statements announcing successes, as on Saturday. The belief that General Joffre has the situation well in hand is confirmed by the fact that it is not found necessary to apply a counter irritant elsewhere. it is understood that General von Blesser, the victor of Antwerp, is directing the German heavy artillery at Verdun. A FRENCH COMMUNIQUE. (Received 12.45 p.m.) Paris, February 28. A communique states: The enemy in the Champagne region at Xavarin-j garni northwards of Souain. by a coup,! de main, succeeded in penetrating some elements of our advanced line and support trench. Hie intense bombardment continues northward of Verdun, especially in the central sector and right. Xo fresh attempt was made against Poivre Hill.
