The St. Kilda Council, who recently declined to take action in the new recruiting scheme on the ground that voluntaryism had been worked threadbare and compulsion was necessary, reconsidered the matter last night, when they were addressed by the Minister for Defence. It was decided after learning the new' facts, to pledge themselves to give every assistance to th scheme, especially as the Minister had pledged himself that if the voluntary scheme was unsuccessful to retire from office if compulsory service did not become law. The Minister for Defence has announced that the Semetary of State for the Colonies advises that the Armv Council highly appreciates the action of the New Zealand Government in creating a New Zealand Armv Division, with the necessary reinforcements. The Minister pointsout that creation of the Division will not involve a general increase, athough an increase will be necessaiy for infantry. There will b e a decrease in other units, making the result regarding the requirements practical y similar to the present needs. _ It i s understood that no official intimation has been received a s to the New Zealand force having landed at Salonika.
