EDUCATION BOARD.
THE MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met at Xew Plymouth yesterday. Present: .Messrs H. Trimhle (chairman), A. Morton, E. Mari'ell. F. Mackay, .T. Young, R. .Masters and G, A. Adlam. Leave of absence was granted to .Mr A. R. Halcognbe and the Rev. A. B. Chappell, OVERSEER’S REPORT.
The overseer reported:—Kaimata : The additions to the school were completed and sundry repairs attended to. Xew desks were also in Stalled., Courtenay Street School; Outside painting and general repairs are being attended to. Lepperton: Dual desks were installed and platforms removed, new lavatory basins and repairs were attended to; new out-offices were also erected. Piko ; The outside painting of the school was attended to and an extra sash frame placed in the classroom. Mimi ; A shelter shed "'as erected at the school. TTruti; The nutside of both school and residence were painted and general repairs attended to. The report was adopted.
TE M FOR AR Y APPO JNTMENTS. The cJiairnian reported that during the interim lie had made the following temporary appointments: —Stratford District High School, Miss E. Smith, fourth assistant; Waitara, Miss Dorothy Simpson, assistant; Tataraimaka, Miss Muriel Kirton, assistant; Frankley, Miss Nora Moore, assistant; Puniwhakau, Miss Rosa Eason, sole charge; Dudley, Miss E. Easton, sole charge; Mimi, Alls M. Peppered, sole charge; Fatua, Mr Homan, sole charge; Egmont Village, Miss E. Drake, assistant; Norfolk, Miss A. Mace, assistant; Norfolk, Miss Dorothy Sirnpon, assistant; Mt. Messenger, Miss F. Murray, sole charge; Dudley, Mr s G. Rrereton, sole charge ; Okato, Miss Doris Mason, assistant; Marco, Mr s E. Bacon, solo charge. The report was adopted. COOKERY INSTRUCTRESS. The chairman reported:—“As Miss Grant did not take up duty after the holidays it became necessary to make temporary arrangements for carrying on the work at Stratford, as otherwise the .classes would- have been held at too late a period of the year. T havearranged that Miss Fapps shall take the cookery classes until a permanent teacher is appointed.” The chairman’s action was confirmed. ELECTION OF BOARD.
The Education Department wrote that for the purpose of the first election of education boards under the new Act it has now been possible to avoid the necessity of altering the boundaries of the school districts by embodying in the regulations for the election a provision that such a school district shall be deemed to be in that area in which the principal school building is situated. The letter added : “The standing requirement of the Act will require, however, the alterations of boundaries to be made sooner or later, and to facilitate this step J now further-iuform you that it is proposed to introduce legislation
next session providing that the parent
of a pupil, even if a non-resident householder, shall be eligible for election to the school committee of the school attended, so that those most directly interested in a school may have the opportunity to serve on the committee.” The letter was received. GEXERAL. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, Miss Menzies. commercial teacher at the Technical College, was granted an increase in salary. A similar application from Mr Ellis, agricultural Instructor, was deferred.
Mrs Browne (of Wanganui) was appointed an assistant instructress at the Technical College. 'Flip action of the Whangamomona. Huiroa and Egmont Village school committees in eloping their schools on aeeonnf of illness was confirmed. The following resignations of teachers were accepted':—Miss 11. Easton (Dudley). Miss K. Winfield (Xorfolk), Miss AT. E. O’Borkc tWaihi’), Miss .T. E. Anld (Okato). Miss K. Taylor (Stratford). Miss .T, Wilson (’Central), Miss E. Death (Fitzroy), and Mr B. H. Cutler (Kaimata).
The overseer was instructed to report on the condition of the Radnor school with an estimate of the cost of altering the building ao «s to make it fit for a school. Permission was granted to any school committee wishing to do so to close its school on March !), the occasion of flip gala day at thp East End.
