FARE-WELL SOCiAL. (From (Jur Own Correspondent). From all directions and m all kinds ol vehicles came tire people on "Monday night last, to the Stanley Road School, until the biggest crowd ever seen there had assembled to do honour to Messrs (Men Sangster aJd dark Sheriff, who have sacrificed home comforts and are leaving everything they hold dear in order to help as to get rid of the tyrant foe. During the evening the following items were contributed in a very creditable manner; Songs, Misses Sangster and Sullivan, duet, Miss E. and Mr (1. Knox, songs, Messrs Hamilton (2), Hale (.2), Sullivan, Lister and Patterson. a During an interval, Mr P- H. Wellington, brieliy wished the departing young men God speed and a sale return. He also apologised for the absence of Lieutenant Gray, who was unavoidably absent. He then called upon Mr-J. B. Hino, M.P./to address the gathering and make ‘presentations to the soldiers. Mr Mine said that the fomea folk connected with those who had gone to light deserved a great deal of sympathy, because they laid to remain at home, being often borne

down with fears and anxiety. Ho also spoke with no uncertain sound to the able-bodied young men present, who had not enlisted. in addressing Messrs Sangster and Sheriff, Mr Hine gave them some real fatherly advice and encouragement, and also wished them God speed'.and a safe return. Ho then presented them each with a gold medal and silver match box as a token of the high esteem in which they arc held by .the people here. Both recipients suitably replied. The Stratford Pipe Band also took the opportunity of presenting Glen Sangster with a shaving set as a slight recognition of the faithful service rendered to the band. “Glen” suitably replied.

Mr All'. Lineham carried out tlie duties of M.C. to the satisfaction of all, doing his utmost to give everybody a good time. The dance music was supplied by Miss Anderson in her usual efficient manner. The ladies again provided an ample and sumptuous supppr. Dancing was kept up till the'wee sura’ ’oors, bringing to a close one of (he most successful functions ever held here.

That big sample room next to the Stratford Hotel, where Demies and Co. hire holding their auction sale, attracted a lot of visitors to inspect the goods advertised to he sold without reserve on Saturday next. Judging hy the appreciative comment of visitors, a huge attendance is assured at the sale which commences on Saturday next at 1 p.m. sharp. T. Lamason’s auction sale is advertised for Saturday; also, on behalf of a client, a quantity of furniture, etc. Hawlcs and Hawles have an inset in this issue drawing attention to their end-of-season drapery and clothing sale. agmmianßwwiMggrgCTiiw
