GENERAL.
The Kawhia Settler of Friday last reports: A strong easterly gale sprang up early last Friday morning and meeting the incoming tide an exceptionally heavy sea rose and swept the northern shore. The gale reached it's climax between nine and ten o'clock (high-water) when breakers re- , sembling the surf on the open loadstead dashed over the wharf and up the beach frontage. Considerable damage resulted, a portion of the concrete foundations of the new Council offices having fallen in and (m----bankment works opposite the Post Office arid near the Fisheries Co.'s establishment being partially destroyed. The launches and >smal| craft had a rough time at anchor and on tile foreshore, but the receding iide and a sudden veering of the wind to the NtW. instantly relieved the situation. The violent suddenness of the hurricane caused some consternation in outlying districts where dead standing trees in bush clearings formed a constant source of danger to stock, I lit no serious damage lias been reported.
