ATTACK AND COUNTFR-ATTACK. ' The High Commissioner reports:— London, February 13 (5 p.m.) North-east of Soissons, following on the bombardment, the Germans reached the French trenches near Cracy roud, but an immediate counter-attack repel!ed them, leaving dead and prisoners. In the Champagne, north-east of the Butte des Mesnil the enemy directed five successive counter-attacks on the evening of yesterday, and in the course of the night, on trenches captured by the French, but all were repulsed. ON THE YSER CANAL. United Press Association. Paris, February 12. I A communique states:- -Our artillery and machine-gun fire frustrated attempts to cross the Yser Canal near Steenstraete and Hethas. There is great artillery activity in the Champagne district. The enemy penetrated a small salient line between the Navarin and St. Souplet roads. GENERAL HAIC'S REPORT. London, February 13. General Sir Douglas Haig reports that there has been considerable artillery and aerial activity on both sides [about Authville, the Hohenzollern redoubt, Guinchy, Armentieres, north of Hooge, and -Ypres. Our curtain of fire [stopped three, but the fourth attack penetrated our first line of trenches. Westward of Hill 140 we immediately counter-attacked and drove out the enemy, and also secured a footing on portions of the advanced trenches eastward of Tahure to the Somnepy Road. We carried out a destructive fire against the organisations northward of. Four de Paris and our artillery crushed an enemy attack eastward of Seppois, in Alsace.
