ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
MAN DROWNED AT LONCBURN. A bathing fatality in which a young •man named William Greene lost hr. life occurred in a backwater of the Manawatu river at Longburn on Sunday afternoon. The victim of the accident was a platelayer employed on the ipermanent way, and was accompanied ■to the bathing pool by a fellow work•nuui, Martin O’Keefe, a young man 'named Sutherland, and a youth named Anderson. Greene was unable to 'swim and was standing on a ledge with I O’Keefe, when he slipped and fell into a deep hole, pulling O’Keefe with •him. O'Keefe is a poor swimmer, but 'he liberated himself and got safely (back to the bank. Greene went clown and did not come up again. Sutherland, who is a good swimmer, made several plucky attempts to effect a rescue but was unable to locate Greene, owing to the water becoming discolored. The police were then rung up, ’and Constable Gow left for the scene |of the tragedy. He was successful in locating the body with a boat book, 'and brought it to the surface, and (later had it conveyed to the morgue at Palmerston. An inquest will be !held later. The deceased was a single man. and the only relative in the Dominion is a brother, who resides at Balfour. Southland, who has been communicated with.
