Germany
THE SOCIALIST PARTY. United Frees Association. New York, January 27. Tlie newspaper Outlook interviewed Herr Liebknecht, who is very despondent. He said that there were now two Socialist parties in (Germany, as a split had come. He blamed 1 the censorship and helplessness of Socialists in resisting the outbreak of war, and continued: “Americans ..cannot imagine the awful power of the, military. In an hour we were, cut off from everyone, and became a separate call in the body politic. Every mental thinker is a prisoner. It is, a war of conquest. There are rich mines in France and Belgium that will never be relinquished. The Socialists, without the press, never understood the situation.” Herr Liebnecht admitted the truth, in his interview, of the remark that the German Socialists had been cowardly, but people must remember that they owned property worth millions sterling; including presses, theatres, and halls.
