A good story is being told concerning a horse which, won at Trentham and returned more than twenty to one to her backers. The owner is said to have been averse to starting >the horse on the day, but the trainer u-us convinced that all was well and 1„. stuck out for a gallop for her. The owner agreed on the conditions that the trainer paid the iocs, guaranteeing :1 totalisator ticket lor every pound paid in expenses if the race were won. 'As often happens in wildrat arrangements of this nature the horse did win. and the owner had to part up more than half the stake (which was a large one) to get clear 0 f his obligation to the trainer. Says a writer in the "Bulletin": Ikey gets it in the neck sometimes. for instance. T went out to Randwk'k for :. flutter on New Year's Day, ami tb e first nice saw me with a shilling. | f decided to risk the lot, 10 to 1 En-Ite.-taincr. Result, Us. Whereupon I put *he ot hi hob in my pocket, and
invested 10s on The Mogul at 8. Heturn, £4 10s. The odd 10s having been put down south, Merrimee was my next choice at 7to 2. That £4 returned £lB, and £l4 went on The Fortune Hunter for the Cup. McNoses
expressed great pleasure when he handed me £ll2 over this 7 to 1 chance. I had almost decided to button up, hut Yauntness for the Nursery seemed to he asking someone to hack her at 8 to 1, so after £l4 had settled on top of what was in the refrigerator, on went £9B, and J key passed out £BB2. Placing £9B in safety, I let Grail carry £748 in the Welter, and Israel yielded up £8624. Balance-sheet shows a return from one shilling of £8740 10s, after having played safe on every race except the first. But, of course, you have to take Ikey the right way to do this regularly,
