The Cossacks charged the rearguard near Ezeroum forts, sabring several hundred, and the artillery began to bombard the forts. CZAR'S UNSHAKEABLE FIRMNESS. RUSSIA WILL HOLD OUT. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Petrograd, January 23. The Czar told a French representative that even if events compel a withdrawal to Volga or Kamschatka we shall preserve an unshakeable firmness. An Austrian communique says:— After a respite of three days the Russian offensive in Bessarabia has been renewed with the arrival of reinforcements. After a night-long bombardment, the Russian infantry attacked the town, advancing in swarms and fighting for the first line of trenches. Late in the afternoon the Russians penetrated a portion of our trenches and after a bitter hand-to-hand encounter the Russians were dislodged.
