Mr and Mrs J. T. Hammond, who have been visiting in the Wellington district, returned to Stratford last evening. Private A. Gorton, who has been spending a holiday in Stratford on special leave, returned to camp by the mail train this morning. Mr P. Skoglund, town clerk, who has been on a holiday visit to "the South Island, returned home from Wanganui by motor oar yesterday. Obituary: Mr George Titheradge, the well-known veteran actor, and Mr Sam Smith, a prominent Laborite and former member of the New South Wales Parliament. Captain Backhand, of the schooner C. S. Holmes, who has been on a tour through the North Island, accompanied by -Mrs and Miss Backhand, returned to New Plymouth yesterday. A London cablegram states that Commander Evans, of Scott's Antarctic expedition, was married in London to Miss Klsa Andvord, who is known as the "Belle of Christiana." A cable message has been received from Quartermaster-Sergeant Bollinger, of New Plymouth, stating that he is well, and stationed at Ismaila, on the Sue/. Canal. Mr H. 11. Young, Inspector of the Income Tax Department, will be i« town for the next few days for the purpose of meeting any farmers who have had difficulty in making their income tax returns.
